How to Have a HEART Study- Chapter 5 & Epilogue

How To Have a HEART for Your Kids

I've joined an online group to go through the book "How to Have a H.E.A.R.T For Your Kids' by Rachael Carman. You can click on the banner above to take you to the blog that is hosting this.

I got behind in reading this so I have just caught up by finishing Chapter 5 and the Epilogue. This post is about what I gleaned from both chapters to finish up this book study. This week's topic is T: Teach Them The Truth and the Epilogue.

Some things I gleaned in the text are as follows:

I have really learned a lot reading this book. These last two chapters hit home for me.

She discussed how dangerous lies and deceit can be. She says "Lies are like wild animals-dangerous and unpredicatable." The most important thing we can teach our children is truth. She states that 'It's paramount that we give them knowledge and understanding of the one true and living God. This is the foundation upon which all other knowledge is built.' We are failing our children if we give them less.

Romans 8:20 reminds us that the world doesn't want God. We can't afford to allow the world to teach our children the truth of God. It's our job to show them the way to heaven and that's through Jesus. God has instructed us to teach our children and to train them up in the Lord.

I love how she goes on to help us understand six facts about truth. She mentions how today's society is all about relative truth. That the truth changes from situation to situation or person to person. Truths are knowable, they exist, they are objective, not subjective, they are absolute, and exclusive. You should read this chapter to get more details on how she explains all of this.. It's so enlightening and very easy to understand and it's shocking to see how the world has fallen prey to such lies..

I need to be reading the Bible more to them. Giving them examples of God, Jesus and the truth's that are printed between the covers. 'We need to regularly open the Word of Life and read it to our children.'

She also mentions ' We must also speak to our children of God's promises made to ordinary people and how their lives were changed in extraordinary ways.' She reads biographies of missionaries and I think that is an excellent idea of showing our children how God works in today's world. She gives some excellent examples of God's people she read to her children and I've written them down so I can find some of them at my local library to read to my boys.

She then goes on to state that we need to be living the Word in our own lives showing our children by example the power of the Holy Spirit. We can't just talk the talk but we need to walk the walk.. 'Too often, we're willing to settle for good enough or far enough or just enough.' We need to be the example in our children's lives because too often they are not and will not get it outside our home.

I love how she states at the end of the chapter that all the work we do to bring our children closer to God, ultimately it's their choice to follow Christ. 'As parents we must accept the responsibility to teach our children diligently, but we cannot choose for them. We can pray for them, but we cannot force them to accept God's will. We must be willing to let go, knowing that He loves our children more than we do.'

In the end we need to focus our eyes on Jesus. We must not lose heart or grow weary. Pray, be in the Word and trust in the Lord. He loves our children more than we ever could. I just need to bring them up to God each day and ask Him daily how to be the best Mom I can for them..

This book was very eye opening. I would highly recommend all parents to take some time to read this short book. 5 chapters.. and packed full of wonderful knowledge, scripture to awaken your walk with the Lord and a sense of love of our wonderful Father. I am so glad I joined this book club.. It was well worth it!

3 in 30 February Challenge Update

3in30 Challenge

If you'd like to join in on the 3 in 30 Challenge, just click on the banner above to get more info and to link up your goals for the month.

My 3 goals I've been working on are below for February.

1. Crafting- I didn't get to any cards this week but did get creative by designing my own organizer so I can keep everything together. I hope to post about it sometime this weekend.

2. Food- I have all but given up on trying to restrict myself of sweets. I am eating it in moderation, I am still at my calorie goals for the day and my exercise is awesome so I am no longer going to be a slave to it! If I feel the scale move up which it hasn't then that's when I will recheck it and see. I am checking my calories on myfitnesspal.com. This is an awesome free website and it really keeps me accountable of my food intake. MUCH BETTER than writing it in a spiral book which is what I've been doing since September. This is much more accurate then how I was doing it!

3. Quality Time- I really feel this is a habit for me now. I've been working since January to make spending time with my boys a daily thing and I have really worked hard at making this a reality. I now think to spend time with them each and everyday and I love how our relationship is blossoming. Less arguing which is a wonderful blessing. I not only spend quality time with them I am also reading books on raising boys and this has really helped me in understanding the male mind/body..

How to Have a Heart Study- Chapter 4

How To Have a HEART for Your Kids

I've joined an online group to go through the book "How to Have a H.E.A.R.T For Your Kids' by Rachael Carman. You can click on the banner above to take you to the blog that is hosting this.

I got behind in reading this so I am catching up over the next couple days. This post is about what I gleaned from Chapter 4. This week's topic is R: Release Them to God.

Some things I gleaned in the text this week are as follows.

THEY ARE NOT OURS

This subject title was a WOW moment for me.. She expresses how our children are God's and I keep forgetting this. He entrusted me with them but they are not mine but His. What also stood out to me was what she said about how some parents just want their kids is to be happy.. "Really? What if their happiness means making your life miserable? What if criminal behavior makes them happy? What if breaking God's law makes them happy? Is 'happiness' really the standard we want to set for our kids?"

She answers this perfectly by stating how we need to move beyond the earthly happiness and focus on giving our children the joy of the Lord. She also mentions that we need to let go of our selfish dreams we have for them.

I love how she helps me open my eyes in how I address my children about their future's. We need to always steer our children toward God and His purpose for their lives. Asking questions like "What do you think God's direction is for your life? What talents do you think He has given you? How do you think you might best serve Him? What draws your heart to God? Are you on the right path? How can I help you?"

I have been pretty critical with my oldest son lately and I really need to tape these questions up to remind me that I need to draw him closer to God and His purpose and not my own selfishness..

This quote really slapped me when I read it.. "We get wrapped up in chasing after achievement for our children according to the world's standards: SAT scores, Ivy League schools, business card titles, 401(k) plans, vacations, and so on. We forget the standard set on Calvary. Instead of sacrificing ourselves, we crucify Christ all over again as we worship at the world's altars and at the feet of its idols."

Now if that quote doesn't pack a punch, I don't know what would. I tend to get wrapped up in the mindset of schoolwork comes first at the sake of sitting down and sharing God's Word with my children. I have put bible studies on the back burner because we were behind on our studies and I really need to put this first...

She goes on talking about 'So many distractions, so little time'. She helps me put into perspective on the priority roles of three things.

1. God and our relationship with Him

2. Parents, siblings and extended family and our relationship with them.

3. Then we can focus on academics.

I love how she says 'The world is not in short supply of smart people. We have plenty of men and women who can manipulate numbers, create new products, or coordinate marketing strategies. But this world is short- way short- of people who have been with Jesus on an everyday basis, cultivating an intimate relationship with the Lord of lords."

She then goes on the remind me how important it is to be in the Word and have a relationship with Jesus for myself. To then pray for our children to remain mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually pure. I know this is really difficult in our sexed up society. You can't go down the street with your children without seeing a billboard, poster or store that shows off inappropriate images. I know now more than ever how important it is to pray for our children's purity!

One other thing that really stood out in this chapter was when she said 'There are times I wonder if perhaps I've been holding on more to my kids than to my God'.. I know I've been doing that. I need to rely more on God, have Him a part of my life at all times. I need to pray more, talk to Him more and be in His word more.

She finishes up expressing how important it is to really steer our children to God. You just never know if you have the next Billy Graham or Mother Teresa growing up in your house!

"We need take care of our children as if they were our own while being ever mindful of the fact that, from the beginning, they were never ours to keep. Release them to God. They are His, and He will take great care of them."

My 3 goals I've been working on are below for February. I know I'm a bit late (AGAIN) getting this posted. I can't seem to get it done over the weekend!! ugh!

1. Crafting- No cards were made this week. Actually nothing creative has been made outside of schoolwork.. I will have to work more on this this coming week.

2. Food- This has been a HUGE challenge for me. I'm taking one day at a time in reducing my sweets. I did have two days this week without and tonight will be another day without so moving forward. All of the sweets I eat are ones I've made... I have not made any other sweets so we are at the end of the stash.. Thank You Jesus.. With the stash gone the temptation is lifted and it really helps.. I just know that if I stop or truly reduce this craving I can actually see the weight loss come off.. I haven't lost a pound in 5 weeks and that's when I started eating sweets more..

3. Quality Time- I have really been enjoying this one. Each day I've been looking at things to do with my boys. I am still reading out loud each night with the boys. They are really loving this.

Photobucket

My husband snapped this photo of us reading one night this past week.

Also we had a picnic in the living room for dinner.. Went to a hands on Science museum, State Capital and a carousel on Friday for fun! As a family we went to a sapphire mine to sift for precious stones.. I also normally go to the store or my outings alone.. This past week I made sure to take one of my boys on each trip so I could spend time with them, talking and getting to know each other better.. The boys really liked that!

3 in 30 February Weekly Update

3in30 Challenge

If you'd like to join in on the 3 in 30 Challenge, just click on the banner above to get more info and to link up your goals for the month.

My 3 goals I've been working on are below for February. I know I'm a bit late getting this posted. Haven't really been online much while hubby was away in Michigan for work.

1. Crafting- I wanted to make cards once a week and so far I've made three. Valentine's card for the hubby and a couple birthday cards for my stash. I was hoping to get more completed but with hubby gone for 12 days I really didn't have much down time. Didn't get a chance AT ALL to make my sample Christmas card..

I did get a chance to do a lot of crafty things this past week preparing for Valentine's Day. I plan to post on it here soon..

2. Food- This one has been awful. I think the fact I posted it on here made me more aware and in turn made me think more about eating sweets.. Horrible. I will say that I ate something sweet each day.. So failed pretty bad but hope to just take one day at a time. It's not like I'm porking out on a ton of junk food.. I just would like to get back to having it as a treat and not a meal course..

3. Quality Time- This one has been so much fun! My goal was to spend more quality time with my boys. While dad was away in Michigan for work I took the boys out for a fun Boys Day Out. We went to the track and ran 2 miles together, then went to the park to play, then played baseball and catch, took them out to dinner, and they had a special drink at Starbuck's. They are still talking about it.. I had a blast and it really helped me grow in our relationship.

I took this pic of all three of us while we were at the park during our day out!

I also set a goal to spend quality time with them individually. I have been reading to my youngest each night. We are currently working on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My oldest has been a bit more of a challenge. He's the kind of child that needs everything perfect, his way and that's hard to accomplish sometimes. I'm still praying and working through this hurdle and hopefully find something we can do together that he will enjoy..

Looking forward to see how this week goes with my challenges..

Homemade Monthly Journal

Another wonderful find over at Pinterest. This time it's not food... I found a wonderful craft to make a monthly journal. That's what I call it and that's what I am going to use it for but she had it as a Gratitude Diary. You can check out what she did over HERE.

She doesn't have any pictures of how she put it together so I had to think outside the box and make mine the way that would work best for me. I was originally going to have it as a gratitude journal but I started it at the beginning of February so I was already a month into 2012. So I decided to use it to journal the things that we are doing, maybe add pictures, drawings, quotes, whatever strikes me.

Here's what I made....

Photobucket
This is the cover. I made it using foam board and scrapbook paper I had on hand.

Photobucket
Inside cover and back cover. I used different paper style that matched the color scheme but to make it a little different. I punched holes in the board and then put hole protectors around them.

Back Cover

Photobucket
My journal/diary is 5" x 7". The pages on the inside are cut up file folders. They are more sturdy than cardstock and you can get them in different colors. I picked mine up at Walmart for under $3.00.

Photobucket
I made the tabs using my Stampin Up Tabs Punch. Outlined it with a Sharpie and added the month.

Homemade Hostess Style Cupcakes

While on Pinterest I came across this delicious looking recipe to make homemade hostess style cupcakes.. Oh, I sooo had to try these. I haven't purchased anything from Hostess in years and my kids have never had a hostess cupcake so I thought this would be a yummy treat for them. I do want to say this is a bit time consuming, only because you have to wait for the cake to cool completely before you can fill them in and top them with chocolate. Other than that it's pretty easy..

Photobucket
Cupcakes are done!

Photobucket
All filled with gooey yummy filling

Photobucket
Chocolate hardening on top... looking good!

Photobucket
All topped off

Photobucket
Ready to eat.. Looks just like a hostess cake.. mmmmmm

If you'd like to make this recipe go on over to Bakingdom to find out what you'll need to make this and the directions to put it together.. You won't be disappointed....

Homemade Reese's Heart Cups

I am a little addicted to Pinterest.. It has so much neat and useful things there. All under one roof so to say! I came across a recipe on there to make homemade Reese's Easter Egg cups.. Well of course it's Valentine's Season so I made them shaped like a heart. These were sooooo delicious... the kids, hubby and myself couldn't taste the difference between these and the store bought and the best part.. they weren't hard to make.. They taste delicious right out of the freezer.. mmmmm

Photobucket
Here's the peanut butter shapes before the chocolate. I just used a cookie cutter in the size I wanted to make the cups..

Photobucket
yummy deliciousness....

If you'd like to make these please go over to Whimsical Princess to get the ingredients and directions.. I know I'll never buy store bought again!

3 in 30 Challenge February Goals

3in30 Challenge

Another month is here which means new goals to set for February. If you'd like to join in on the 3 in 30 Challenge, just click on the banner above to get more info and to link up your goals for the month.

My 3 goals I would like to work on for February are:

1. Crafting- I have let this go since the holidays. I have all the materials to start my Christmas cards for 2012. I know it's only February... I would like to work on getting my sample complete and work on at least 5 cards a week for this month. I would also like to make some more cards for my stash so I have them ready to send when I need them.

I just made a 2012 mini memory book so I can add thoughts, pictures, momentos etc to it. I'd like to be able to keep up on that. I would like to spend at least once a week making cards and updating my memory book. I would also like to do a craft a week with the boys. Something hands on with them that's not school work.

2. Food- I am having a lot of sweet cravings this month since Christmas. I really want to somehow combat that and not eat as much as I have. I think this is a reason why the scale isn't going down. (it's still the same) I am working out to balance the sweets I've been eating. So this month I would like to see myself limiting sweets each week. Once a week at that and a small amount. I need to eat more often, small portions so I don't end up with an empty stomach and craving sugar foods.

3. Quality Time- I really want to continue with my January goal with a twist. I started out by being more diligent with my time but started working on spending more time with my boys. I really want to focus on that this month. I really feel a pull from the Lord that I need to take more time to BE with my boys. Doing things that they like and getting to know them better on their level. One on one time with them at least once a week and spending time with the boys together at least once a week. I would also like to show them some things I like to do and have them help me with that once a week..

Here is my February goals.. I'll be posting once a week on how my goals are going.. Until then...
