8th Grade Homeschool Graduation Cake

This was our last week of school for this year before the Summer Season kicks in. I wanted my youngest son to be honored for completing the 8th grade and moving onto High School level work in the Fall by making him a little grad cake to celebrate this milestone..

I can't believe my baby is 14 and now heading into his final years of school and final years before adulthood.. sniff sniff.... He was trooper since he didn't want to wear the hat I bought for him.. I'm glad he cooperated and had a fun photo to remember the occasion..

Congrats Little Man.. the blessings of High School awaits you....

A Treasure Concealed
by Tracie Peterson

There is more than gold to be found in these hills.
Emily Carver longs to have a home of her own, but instead she endures a transient existence in the gold mining camps of Montana, where her father's hopes for riches lie endlessly buried. Promises of wealth from this wild land have brought only hardship and disappointment, causing Emily to wonder if her own modest dreams will ever see the light of day.

Caeden Thibault, a young geologist working for the government, is a man trying to escape the pain of his past, and the idyllic mountains of Montana serve his purposes well. In the course of his work, he has seen more than his share of starry-eyed gold seekers. So when Emily Carver catches his attention, he is intrigued by the fact that she isn't pinning her hopes on striking it rich.

Will an unexpected discovery come between them or draw them together?

My Thoughts on This Book:

I absolutely love Tracie Peterson's style of writing. The history she shares makes me feel like I'm living in that time period. This book had an extra special place in my heart since I live in the area where this book takes place.. Big Sky Country Montana... Getting to live through the eyes of Emily and Caeden in the wild west of Montana during the Gold Rush..

This story tugged on my heart as tragedy strikes the family one after the other and all Emily's father wants to do for his family is to strike it rich and provide everything he can for them. When Caeden comes to town to do his job, he finds himself wrapped up into the lives of the Carver's. Thinking he was better off alone, time with Emily may be changing his mind and heart... Well written and can't wait to read the second in this Sapphire Brides series...

Olaf- Frozen Cake w/ Fondant Ruffles

My friend asked me the other day if I could help her mother out and make a cake for her to celebrate her neighbor's upcoming birthday. I told her I would love to help.. She wanted an Olaf cake from the movie Frozen. A disclaimer... I've NEVER watched the movie Frozen so this was an adventure...

The best part.. I had 24 hours to make it..

I had an idea in my head and decided to go with it.. After several trips to Pinterest to get Olaf inspiration and a quick trip to the store for supplies I was off and running. I decided not only to invent Olaf without really knowing who he is, I decided to make my very first ever fondant cake.. Can you say crazy person!!!

I decided to do a lace technique after looking at a few pictures.. I dyed the fondant a light blue since I see everything in the store that color that had anything to do with this movie.. Then thankfully my hubby came to my rescue when he got off work. Still doing the ruffles on the bottom cake and it was after 7pm and the cake needed to be done by 10pm I needed help. Olaf was NOT made.. After he looked over the photo I saved, he went to work.. Just a hair passed 9:30 Olaf was done and the cake was completed.. After delivering the cake we noticed he's missing his eyebrows and the little hair wisp on the top of his head.. but like I said, haven't watched the movie so I'll say a win for us..

I was told she loved the cake so I'm happy... This was also the first cake I've ever made for someone outside of my family.. I'm happy with the results..
